Applicants with language scores within the above ranges may be permitted to begin their studies by registering in credit ESLA courses(s) and a limited number of credit courses until their ESLR is completed.

Admission with an ESL requirement (Foundation ESL courses required)
Students with scores shown in Table 2 below may be admitted with an English as a Second Language Requirement (ESLR).? When they first start in their program, these students will be required to take our ESL Foundation courses along with a limited number of courses from their degree program. This admission with an ESLR allows students to earn academic credits from degree courses taken while completing the English requirements.

Students who are academically admissible to their degree program, but who are unable to provide a language test score in the ranges listed above should consider studying in an intensive ESL program. One option is Carleton’s on-campus language school partner, CultureWorks.

Fast Track is intended for students who are slightly below the minimum ESL requirements to be admitted directly to Carleton for degree studies in September. In partnership with CultureWorks ESL, Carleton will conditionally admit students to study in this intensive ESL program if they present the minimum required proficiency scores of:
- IELTS (minimum 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5)
- TOEFL (minimum 75 with a 21 in Writing, and no band lower than 19)
- CAEL (minimum 60 with no band lower than 50)
- PTE Academic (minimum 54 with no communicative skill lower than 54)
